How to Merge PDF Files on iPhone or iPad

iOS has no built-in way to merge two PDFs. The App Store is full of tools that will, most of them subscription-gated after the second file. You do not need any of them — Safari can do the job.

Merging in Safari

1. 1Open the Merge PDF tool in Safari or Chrome on your iPhone.
2. 2Tap the upload area. iOS offers Photos, Files and any connected cloud drive.
3. 3Pick your PDFs. You can add them in several goes if they live in different places.
4. 4Drag the files into the right order, then tap Merge.
5. 5The combined PDF saves to Files, in the Downloads folder on your iPhone.

Because the merge runs inside the browser tab, nothing is uploaded — the file never leaves the phone. That matters more on a phone than anywhere else, since the documents on it tend to be personal.

Finding the merged file afterwards

iOS puts browser downloads in Files, under On My iPhone then Downloads. From there you can share it, move it to iCloud Drive, or attach it to an email in the usual way. If you cannot find it, tap the downloads arrow in the Safari toolbar, which lists recent files and jumps straight to them.

Merging photos of documents

Photos cannot be merged directly. Convert them first with JPG to PDF — which will also combine several images into one file in a single step — and then merge that result with your other PDFs.

If you are photographing paper, use the scan option in the Notes app rather than the camera. It crops to the page edges and corrects the perspective, and it exports a PDF directly.

When the phone is the wrong tool

Browser-based work uses the device's own memory. A phone handles a handful of ordinary documents comfortably, but merging twenty 40-page colour scans will run out of room, and Safari will reload the tab rather than warning you. If the job is that big, wait until you are at a computer — the same tool, more memory.
