How to Center Text in a PDF

Titles, section headings and short statements are meant to sit in the middle of the page, but PDFs arrive from every source with text glued to the left edge. Centering has two honest parts: switching the line so its letters centre inside the line box, and moving the line so the box itself sits mid-page. The Edit PDF tool does both live in the browser.

Two kinds of centering

• Horizontal alignment centres the letters within the width of the text line — the fix for a left-justified title.
• Positioning centres the entire text line on the page, which you reach by dragging the line into place with the alignment guides.
• Only lines stored as real characters respond to either; a scan is a picture and needs OCR before any of this works.

Center a heading, step by step

The page preview updates as you work, so you can nudge a title until it looks optically balanced — which often differs from mathematically centered by a few pixels once ascenders and capitals are involved.

Centering across multiple pages

Each line is centered independently. For a consistent set of chapter titles, center and position the first one, note where it sits, then apply the same alignment and position to the matching titles on the other pages so the book or report looks deliberate rather than accidental.

When left-aligned is the right call

Centering works best for short headings and labels. Long paragraphs centred look amateurish and tire the eyes — body copy should stay aligned to one edge, and headings centered. When in doubt, center the titles and keep the prose left-aligned.
