Redact PDF — frequently asked questions

Is redaction permanent?+

Yes. Each selected page is re-drawn as a flat image that is fully blacked out, so its original text, images and hidden layers are not carried into the new file. The page itself stays in the document, so page count and numbering do not change.

Can redacted content be recovered?+

No. Unlike drawing a black rectangle over text, which leaves the text underneath, the redacted pages are rebuilt from a blacked-out image and the original page content is discarded.

Can I black out just part of a page?+

Not in this tool — it redacts whole pages. To draw boxes over specific text or images, use the Redact tab in PDF Workspace, which burns your boxes into the page the same permanent way.
