How to Print to PDF on a Chromebook (Free, Built-In)

How do I print to PDF on a Chromebook?

To print to PDF on a Chromebook, open the page or document, press Ctrl + P, set Destination to Save as PDF, and click Save. ChromeOS writes the file to your Downloads folder instead of sending it to a printer. It works in Chrome, Google Docs, Gmail and any app that can print.

What print-to-PDF is good at — and not

• Great for: web pages, receipts, emails, Google documents, images, and anything any app can print.
• Not for: combining several documents into one file — you get exactly what you printed, one file per print.
• Not for: editing. A PDF you create this way is a snapshot; change the source and print again.
• Not for: keeping fillable form fields. Printing a form to PDF draws the answers into the page, which is useful when you want it flattened and a problem when you do not.

What goes wrong, and the fix

• Save as PDF is missing from Destination → click See more; it is always in the full list.
• The right edge of a table is cut off → switch Layout to Landscape, or reduce Scale under More settings.
• A URL and date appear on every page → turn off Headers and footers.
• Colours and pictures are missing → turn on Background graphics.
• The PDF is huge → the page was full of large images; compress it afterwards.

Shrink the result if it is too big

A web page with many images can come out surprisingly large — sometimes too large to attach to an email or a school portal. Open the printed PDF in Compress PDF, type the size it has to fit under in MB or KB (or pick a preset such as 50% or 25% of the original), and download the smaller copy.
