How to Remove a Password From a PDF

Bank statements, payslips and insurance documents commonly arrive encrypted. Once you have opened one and want to file it, merge it or search it, retyping the password every single time becomes a genuine nuisance.

Remove the password

1. 1Open the Unlock PDF tool and add the file.
2. 2Enter the password you already use to open it. If the file opens without one and only printing or copying is blocked, leave the field empty.
3. 3Download the unprotected copy.
4. 4Store it somewhere appropriately secure — it is now readable by anyone who has it.

The two things "locked" can mean

The second case is not encryption. The document is fully readable; a flag simply asks software to disable some actions, and the flag can be cleared. That is why removing a print restriction is trivial and removing an open password is not.

Can you unlock a password-protected PDF without the password?

Only in the second case above. If the file opens on its own and merely blocks printing or copying, the Unlock PDF tool clears those restrictions with the password field left empty. If the file asks for a password before it will open, the tool needs that password — it does not guess, crack or bypass it, and a wrong password is simply rejected so you can try again.

If you have forgotten the password

• Check where the password usually comes from. Bank and payroll PDFs often use a documented pattern, such as part of a date of birth or account number, explained in the email that delivered them.
• Ask whoever sent the file to resend it, or to send the password again through a separate channel.
• If you made the file yourself, export it again from the original Word, Excel or design file without a password.

When it is legitimate

Removing protection from your own documents — your statements, your payslips, files you were sent and are entitled to keep — is ordinary document management. Removing it from someone else's confidential file, or circumventing protection to redistribute a document you licensed, is not, and in many places is unlawful.

The practical test: were you given the password because you are meant to read this? Then decrypting your own copy for your own filing is fine.

Do it locally

Password removal means handing over both a confidential document and the password that opens it. Doing that on a server is a poor trade for convenience. A browser-based tool does the decryption on your own machine, so neither the file nor the password is transmitted — and it is free, with no account to create.

What the unlocked copy looks like

Be aware of one trade-off. When Slate PDF removes encryption, it redraws each page as a high-resolution image and lays the original text back over it as an invisible, searchable layer. The pages look the same and you can still search and select the text, but clickable links and fillable form fields are not carried across, and the file can come out larger than the original.

Afterwards

The unlocked copy has no protection at all. If it is going into cloud storage or a shared drive, make sure that location is itself secured — you have moved the protection from the file to wherever you put it.

Unlocking is often half of a workflow: remove the password, merge or tidy the file, then lock the finished version again with the Protect PDF tool and a fresh password of your choosing.
