You do not need a scanner to scan a document. The camera in your pocket already captures more detail than a document needs. What a scanner adds is a flat, evenly lit, square image, and software can now do that part: edge detection, perspective correction and a cleanup filter. All of it runs free in your browser, so you can scan a document without a scanner and end up with a proper PDF.
How can I scan a document without a scanner?

Why your phone camera is already a scanner
A flatbed scanner captures a page at a fixed distance and angle under its own light, which is why its output looks flat and evenly lit. Holding a phone over a page brings in three problems: angle, shadow and a messy crop. A good in-browser scanner fixes each one. It outlines the page edges, warps the image so the page becomes a true rectangle, and divides out the uneven lighting so the paper comes out white rather than grey.
Scan a document with your phone, step by step
- 1Open the Scan PDF tool in your phone’s browser and tap Open camera. Allow camera access when asked.
- 2Lay the page flat on a surface darker than the paper and hold the phone above it.
- 3Wait for the outline: amber means the page is found, green means it is steady. With Auto capture on, it takes the shot; otherwise tap the shutter.
- 4For more pages, put the next one in place. The scanner sees the change and captures again.
- 5Tap the thumbnail at the bottom left to review. Crop, rotate or change the filter on any page: Auto color (the default), Original, Light text, Grayscale, B&W or Whiteboard.
- 6Tap Save PDF, choose the page size and file size, and tap Save as PDF. Download it or share it straight from the phone.
Scanning from a laptop or desktop instead
The tool is built for phones, but a computer works too. On a desktop the Scan PDF page offers three routes: Import photos (pictures you already took, including iPhone HEIC files), Use webcam (hold the page up to the laptop camera), and Copy link for your phone, which is the fastest way to move to a better camera. Imported photos get the same automatic edge detection and straightening as live captures, so a slanted photo from your camera roll still comes out square.
Making the scan look like a flat document
- Place the page on a desk instead of holding it. Steadier frames are detected faster and come out straighter.
- Fill the frame with the page, keeping a small margin around all four edges.
- Shoot in even light. If the status line says it is too dark, add a lamp or move near a window; use the flash button only if one appears and the paper is matte.
- Pick the filter after you capture: Auto color for most pages, B&W for plain printed text, Light text for faint pencil or faded print.
- If an edge is slightly off, open Crop and drag the corner. The magnifier shows exactly where it lands.

Run this test before you send anything
Open the finished PDF on your phone, zoom in on the smallest print on the page (a footnote, an account number, a date) and read it out loud. If you hesitate over a single digit, the recipient will too. Rescan that page with more light and the phone a little closer rather than trying to sharpen it afterwards; the Retake button replaces just that page.
After the scan
The output is a standard PDF ready to email, upload or store. Tick Recognize text (OCR) when saving if you want to search or copy the text later; it runs on your device. If the file is too big for an upload form, save it again with File size set to Small before reaching for a separate compressor.
