Merge vs Split a PDF: Which One Do You Need?

Practically every PDF task is either combining or dividing. You have three separate invoices that need to be one attachment, or one giant scan that needs to become twelve individual pages. Merging and splitting are opposite operations with the same underlying idea: you decide how many files a document should be.

Merge PDFs when several documents belong together — a contract plus its addendums, a folder of receipts for an expense claim, or the scanned pages of one report. Split a PDF when one file actually contains several documents — the pages should travel separately, different sections go to different people, or a single large file is simply unwieldy.

When to merge PDFs

Merging is for turning a mess of loose files into one clean document. Email attachments have limits and are hard to keep organized; a single combined PDF travels more cleanly, prints in the right order, and gives the reader one thing to open.
