Why Does My PDF Open in Word? (Fix It in 30 Seconds)

Why does my PDF open in Word?

Your PDF opens in Word because Word is set as the default app for .pdf files, usually after an Office install or update, or after you once chose “Open with Word” and ticked “always”. Word then converts the PDF into an editable document, which shifts fonts and layout. Change the default app back to a PDF reader.

• An Office install or update claimed the .pdf file type.
• Someone chose Word in an “Open with” prompt and ticked “Always”.
• The file is not really a PDF: it is named something like contract.pdf.docx and Windows is hiding the last extension.

On Windows

1. 1Right-click the PDF and choose Open with > Choose another app.
2. 2Pick a real PDF reader: Microsoft Edge, Adobe Acrobat Reader, or your browser.
3. 3Choose “Always”, or tick “Always use this app to open .pdf files”.
4. 4Alternatively, go to Settings > Apps > Default apps, type .pdf in the search box, and change the handler.

On Mac

On Android and ChromeOS

1. 1Find the PDF in the Files app and long-press it (or right-click on a Chromebook).

4. 4If Android no longer asks, open Settings > Apps > Word > Open by default and clear the defaults. The exact menu names vary by phone.

Check it is really a PDF

Windows hides “known” file extensions by default, so a Word file called report.pdf.docx shows up as report.pdf — and, correctly, opens in Word. In File Explorer, turn on View > Show > File name extensions (Windows 11) or tick File name extensions on the View tab (Windows 10). If the real extension is .docx, the file was never a PDF, and no default-app setting will change that. Save it as PDF from Word if you need one.

Why Word should not be the default for PDFs

Word does not merely display a PDF — it converts its contents into a Word document, and tells you so. That is why pages reflow, fonts swap and graphics drift when you double-click a PDF. A reader renders the file exactly as its author laid it out. The original PDF is not damaged, but if you click Save in Word you get a .docx, not the PDF you started with.

If you actually needed to edit the PDF

1. 1Keep Word out of the picture for small edits — it converts instead of editing.

3. 3Click a line of text and type; use Add text or Add image for new content.
