iLovePDF is one of the best-known PDF sites in the world, and for good reason: it is fast, it covers almost every PDF job, and it is available in 25 languages. The trade-off is that every file you process is uploaded to its servers. If that is the part that bothers you, this is the iLovePDF alternative to look at.
What is the best iLovePDF alternative without uploading?
For people who don’t want their documents on someone else’s server, the best iLovePDF alternative is a tool that runs entirely in the browser. Slate PDF is one: its 39 tools process files on your own device, so nothing is uploaded, and it is free with no account and no task limit.
- Merge, split, compress, convert, sign, redact and OCR without uploading.
- Works offline once a tool page has loaded.
- Available in 30 languages.
Does iLovePDF upload your files?
Yes. iLovePDF processes documents on its servers. Its own blog says files are deleted within two hours of processing and offers a button to delete them sooner. A network test published by Filozy in September 2026 recorded iLovePDF uploading the test file as soon as it was selected — as did Smallpdf, PDF24, Sejda, PDF Candy and several others.
Deletion after two hours is a sensible policy, and nothing suggests iLovePDF mishandles files. But for a medical record, a contract under NDA or an ID scan, “we delete it later” is a weaker promise than “it never left your computer”.

How to check that a PDF tool doesn’t upload your file
- 1Open the tool page and press F12 to open developer tools, then the Network tab.
- 2Clear the list, add your PDF and run the tool.
- 3Look for a request roughly the size of your file. If there is one, the tool uploaded it.
- 4Or load the page, switch on airplane mode and run the tool: a tool that needs a server will fail.
When iLovePDF is still the better pick
- You need its desktop or mobile apps, or to work straight from Google Drive or Dropbox.
- You convert complex PDFs to Word and need the layout rebuilt — server-side converters do this better than Slate PDF, which moves the text but not the layout.
- You need team accounts or signature requests sent to other people.
Common iLovePDF jobs, done without uploading
- Merge PDF: combine up to 20 PDFs at once, losslessly.
- Compress PDF: set a target size in MB or KB — handy for upload forms with a hard limit.
- JPG to PDF, Word to PDF, Excel to PDF and PowerPoint to PDF.
- Sign PDF: draw, type or upload your signature and place it on any page.
- Redact PDF: black out text or whole pages permanently.

Is iLovePDF safe to use?+
iLovePDF uses encrypted connections and says it deletes files within two hours. It does upload every file to its servers, so for highly confidential documents a tool that processes files on your device is the safer choice.
Is there an iLovePDF alternative that works offline?+
Yes. Slate PDF runs in your browser; once a tool page has loaded you can switch off your connection and keep working. OCR needs to download its language model once first.
Is Slate PDF free like iLovePDF?+
Yes, and without the free-plan caps: there is no task limit, no file-count limit beyond 20 files per merge, no account and no watermark.
Does any Slate PDF tool upload data?+
Only Translate PDF, which sends the extracted text (not the file) to a translation service and tells you before it does. Every other tool works entirely on your device.
