A free Smallpdf alternative with no 2-tasks-a-day cap, no account and no upload: merge, compress, convert and sign PDFs in your browser.

If you are looking for a Smallpdf alternative because you hit the free limit halfway through a job, you are not alone: the most common reason people switch is the daily cap on free tasks. This page compares the two honestly — including the things Smallpdf does better — so you can pick the right tool for the job in front of you.
Is there a free Smallpdf alternative with no limit?
Yes. Slate PDF is a free alternative to Smallpdf with no daily task limit, no account and no upload: its 39 tools — merge, split, compress, convert, edit, sign, OCR and more — run inside your browser, so the only practical limit is your device’s memory. Smallpdf’s free plan, by contrast, stops you after two tasks a day.
- No daily or hourly task limit, and no sign-up wall.
- Files are processed on your device and never uploaded.
- No watermark on anything you download.

Why people look for a Smallpdf alternative
1. The two-tasks-a-day cap
Two tasks sounds like enough until a real job needs three: merge the scans, compress the result for email, then add a signature. On Smallpdf’s free plan the third step hits a paywall. In Slate PDF every step is free, as many times as you like, because there is no server doing the work for us to pay for.
2. Uploading confidential documents
Smallpdf processes files on its servers and says it deletes them after an hour, with ISO 27001-certified security. That is a reasonable policy — but it still means a copy of your payslip, contract or ID scan leaves your device. A network test published by Filozy in September 2026 recorded Smallpdf uploading the test file as soon as it was selected. Slate PDF never sends your file anywhere; the only exception is Translate PDF, which sends extracted text to a translation service and warns you first.
How to switch: the same jobs, step by step
- 1Merge: open Merge PDF, add up to 20 PDFs in the order you want them, click Merge PDFs and download.
- 2Compress: open Compress PDF, type the size you need (for example 2 MB for an email limit) or pick a preset, then download.
- 3Convert: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and image files go to PDF with the matching tool; PDF to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and JPG go the other way.
- 4Several jobs on one document: open the PDF Workspace to edit, redact, sign, stamp and password-protect without downloading in between.
Where Smallpdf is the better choice
An honest comparison has to say this part out loud. Smallpdf is the better fit if you need any of the following:
- Layout-faithful PDF to Word conversion. Smallpdf converts on its servers and rebuilds layout; Slate PDF’s PDF to Word carries the text across as editable paragraphs but does not rebuild complex layouts or images.
- Cloud workflows: opening from and saving to Google Drive or Dropbox, or sharing a link to a document.
- Team accounts, e-signature requests with tracking, and admin controls.
- A desktop or mobile app rather than a browser tab.
If your work is the everyday kind — merging, compressing, converting images and Office files, signing, splitting, redacting — and you care about privacy or simply do more than two tasks a day, a browser-based tool covers it for free.
What Slate PDF can’t do (yet)
- Very large files are limited by your device’s memory; on an older phone, a several-hundred-page scan is better handled on a computer.
- Text recognition (OCR) downloads its language model once, so the first run needs a connection.
- Signatures are visual signatures, not certificate-based digital signatures with an audit trail.

PDF Workspace
Edit, redact, sign, stamp and secure one document without leaving the page. It runs in this browser tab — your file is not uploaded anywhere.
Open PDF WorkspaceFrequently asked questions
Is there a completely free alternative to Smallpdf?+
Yes. Slate PDF is free with no daily task limit, no account and no watermark. It runs in your browser, so your files are processed on your device instead of being uploaded.
How many free tasks does Smallpdf allow?+
As of October 2026 Smallpdf’s free plan allows two tasks per day; after that it asks you to upgrade. Free-plan limits change, so check Smallpdf’s pricing page for the current figure.
Does Smallpdf upload my files?+
Yes. Smallpdf processes files on its servers and says it deletes them after one hour. A tool that runs in the browser, such as Slate PDF, never sends the file at all.
Which is better for converting PDF to Word?+
For layout-faithful conversion of complex documents, Smallpdf’s server-side converter is stronger. Slate PDF converts the text into an editable Word file but does not rebuild complex layouts.
